Foundational Doctrines Review

      1. Buildings are built in certain steps
      2. And the quality of a building is not determined by the surface finishes that are visible
      3. The Pastor of Hebrews has made the case that every Christian needs a strong and robust foundation that has paid attention to and is capable of teaching about certain fundamentals
      4. Today we will see
        1. the final goal of the Christian life, resurrection,
        2. and the result of those not in Christ, judgment.

Resurrection of the Dead

      1. The doctrine of the resurrection is a basic, elementary, foundational doctrine.
        1. Paul says without this doctrine, or if it turns out to be false, then all hope of the Christian is gone and we are liars and pitiable (1Cor 15:13-19).
          1. Why is this?
            1. Because the fundamental problem with the world is sin. Sin produced death, so unless death can be defeated there is no proof that sin can be overcome.
            2. So important that it became a central component of the apostolic message (Act 4:2, 4:33, 17:18, 17:32, 1Pet 1:3).
            3. But the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead isn’t just about Jesus.
          2. According to Christianity every person who has ever physically died will be resurrected (Dan 12:2, Jn 5:28-29, Act 24:15, Jn 11:24-25)
      2. involves a separation of people (Mt 25:31, 33).
      3. But to what exactly is Hebrews referring? (Rev 20:5-6
        1. The hope of the Christian that through death, they enter into eternal life with God, and will ultimately receive a physical body and live in a physically recreated world where life flourishes and God is worshiped fully and without restraint or hindrance.

Eternal Judgment

      1. For what are people judged? (Rev 20:12, 21:8,1Cor 6:9-11, Titus 3:2-6).
      2. This all of this proceeds from an even greater sin – the blasphemy of the Spirit, (Mt12:31)
      3. And this judgment is described in terrifying images in the Bible
        1. Fire that never ceases (Prov 30:16)
        2. Weeping and gnashing of teeth (Mt 13:42)
        3. Consciousness torment (Lk 16:19ff)
