Introducing Shame

The first occurrence of the concept of shame in the Bible is at creation (Gen 2:25)

          1. Shame is a powerful force
            1. But it wasn’t original to the creation.
            2. A lack of shame was the created order at first.
          2. The Hebrew word is בּוֹשׁ (bush)
            1. According to NIDOTTE, the term can mean a
              1. “feeling of embarrassment… [or] rejection and abandonment by [another] in a superior position”.
              2. But something happens: Hide from one another & from God (Gen 3:6-10)
            2. What does this tell us about shame?
              1. Shame is a social response
              2. Shame is related to disobedience

People try to deal with shame by covering up or pretending to be something they are not.

          1. So what are your ways of trying to cover up your disobedience?
          2. What are your coverups and pretendings to try to ease off embarrassment, rejection, or abandonment?

What is the Solution to shame?

          1. Transparency: Admitting who we really are (Gen 3:21, 1Jn 1:9)
          2. Finding real acceptance in Jesus (Jn 15:15)
