Our sermon is entitled, “Compassion”. The main Scriptures for the day are Luke 10:25-37.   (Pick and choose from the many resources…

The deity of Jesus in Jude

A second title worth exploring is the ascription of deity to Jesus in verse 25.  The passage “begins, “to the only God,” echoing the distinctive Jewish confession passed down through the centuries.”[1]  Deuteronomy 6:4 declares, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.”  This central doctrine of the Old Testament is foundational to monotheism.  There is only one God.  And yet, Jude is asserting that the activities of God in the Old Testament were performed by Jesus…

The Simple Jesus in Jude 5

The final name to explore is the shortest name that Jude uses, the simple uncompounded, unmodified Jesus.  This name is found in verse 5 but not in every manuscript. Therefore, it is wise to review the variants before moving on in this study. Philipp Bartholomä has cataloged the three main variants and 2 lesser attested variants.[1]  The possible subjects for Jude 5 are “(reading 1) “Lord” [κύριος]; (reading 2) “Jesus” [Ἰησοῦς] and (reading 3) “God” [θεός]”.  After a worthy study of…

Oswald Chambers on Total Surrender

This post originally published at https://utmost.org/total-surrender/ March 12 Total Surrender By Oswald Chambers Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.” —Mark 10:28 Our Lord replies to this statement of Peter by saying that this surrender is “for My sake and the gospel’s” (Mark 10:29). It was not for the purpose of what the disciples themselves would get out of it. Beware of surrender that is motivated by personal benefits that may result. For example,…

The second Triad of names for Jesus in Jude

In the final triad of names, Jude uses the more explicit our Lord Jesus Christ(17, 21) and a variation that carries the same meaning Jesus Christ our Lord (24).  These three usages build upon the first triad but make it more explicit that Jesus Christ is always the Lord of believers and it is He who brings mercy and eternal life (21) as well as being the one through whom blamelessness is received (24). Furthermore, all those apart from the Lord…
