Foundational Doctrines Review
-
-
- Buildings are built in certain steps
- And the quality of a building is not determined by the surface finishes that are visible
- The Pastor of Hebrews has made the case that every Christian needs a strong and robust foundation that has paid attention to and is capable of teaching about certain fundamentals
- Today we will see
- the final goal of the Christian life, resurrection,
- and the result of those not in Christ, judgment.
-
Resurrection of the Dead
-
-
- The doctrine of the resurrection is a basic, elementary, foundational doctrine.
- Paul says without this doctrine, or if it turns out to be false, then all hope of the Christian is gone and we are liars and pitiable (1Cor 15:13-19).
- Why is this?
- Because the fundamental problem with the world is sin. Sin produced death, so unless death can be defeated there is no proof that sin can be overcome.
- So important that it became a central component of the apostolic message (Act 4:2, 4:33, 17:18, 17:32, 1Pet 1:3).
- But the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead isn’t just about Jesus.
- According to Christianity every person who has ever physically died will be resurrected (Dan 12:2, Jn 5:28-29, Act 24:15, Jn 11:24-25)
- Why is this?
- Paul says without this doctrine, or if it turns out to be false, then all hope of the Christian is gone and we are liars and pitiable (1Cor 15:13-19).
- involves a separation of people (Mt 25:31, 33).
- But to what exactly is Hebrews referring? (Rev 20:5-6
- The hope of the Christian that through death, they enter into eternal life with God, and will ultimately receive a physical body and live in a physically recreated world where life flourishes and God is worshiped fully and without restraint or hindrance.
- The doctrine of the resurrection is a basic, elementary, foundational doctrine.
-
Eternal Judgment
-
-
- For what are people judged? (Rev 20:12, 21:8,1Cor 6:9-11, Titus 3:2-6).
- This all of this proceeds from an even greater sin – the blasphemy of the Spirit, (Mt12:31)
- And this judgment is described in terrifying images in the Bible
- Fire that never ceases (Prov 30:16)
- Weeping and gnashing of teeth (Mt 13:42)
- Consciousness torment (Lk 16:19ff)
-
